Software Update May 2010

Software Update May 2010

This software update is a re-release of the April service pack which fixes a bug introduced in General Beam. The April service pack fixes the following issues and also includes several feature enhancements

BS5950 Composite Beam Design

BS 5950 part 3 which covers the design of composite beams has been updated by a safety amendment - BS 5950-3.1: 1990 + A1 2010 and the changes have now been included within the software. A new version of the composite beam design code has been added to the software, you can select this from within the Design Code dialog within Building Designer and the Composite Beam Design software. You can continue to use the old code for existing designs, but for all new designs these should be carried out in accordance with the new version of the code.

Composite Beam Web Openings, the calculation of the Moment Capacity was incorrect for the Upper Tee when the position of the neutral axis is in the stiffener. This fixes the issue reported in Building Designer Product Bulletin No. 11 - March 2010.

Building Designer

A new feature has been added to the "Selection Groups" workspace. Within the tree structure a new item has been added labelled "Sections". Under this item sorted by Beams, Columns and Braces, all the different steel section sizes used within the model are listed along with the associated elements which use these sections. There is an option to highlight them within the model as an entire group or as individual elements. They also become automatically selected within the properties window, allowing the section size, steel grade to be changed.

A new export command has been added to the file menu - "Export to ReViewer", in preparation for the release of the FASTRAK Building Designer ReViewer product.

AISC

The Drift calculation used to calculate seismic affects has been amended to calculate the displacement delta from the elastic analysis based only on the seismic load case in the combination. This fixes the issue reported in Building Designer Product Bulletin No. 13 - March 2010.

Portal Frame

An enhancement to the Portal Frame auto member stability check routines, which improves the automatic selection of the most appropriate check for the restraint conditions and the unrestrained length.

An enhancement has been made to the Portal Frame member stability graphic to improve the graphical selection of restraint's and checks.

A crash has been fixed, which occurred when a restraint was changed from a flange restraint to a torsional restraint. This only occurred when the Portal Frame had been exported from Building Designer and the export had been performed more than once.

An enhancement has been made to the main Portal Frame graphic, which now automatically updates any changes made to the restraint position and type.

A crash has been fixed, which occurred when editing the Design groups of a Portal Frame within Building Designer.

A crash has been fixed, which could occur when deleting a mono pitch span when it was at the right hand most span of a multi-span frame.

Connection forces were being shown as zero for some portal frames due to a tolerance issue, when the span of the frame was not a rounded number.

A crash has been fixed, which occurred when running the updating connections command, when the update connections command had previously been run on a PC without a valid moment connection licence.

An enhancement has been made, which now gives the user now the option to update any existing Wind loadcases, if changes are subsequently made to the Portal Frame Building Wind load data after wind loadcases have been generated.

BS5950 Simple Connections

The Simple Toe Plate connection has been enhanced to allow the situation where the supported beam depth is the same size or smaller than the supporting beam.

EC3

Change to the formulation of C1 which gives a more accurate calculation of this value. Only affects General Columns designed to EC3.

EC3 Simple Connections

Simple Column Base Design to EC3 using the effective area method. The design is carried out in accordance with documents soon to be published by the SCI.

Simple Connection Design to EC3, which includes fin plates, flexible end plate and flush flexible end plate connections. The design is carried out in accordance with ECCS Technical Committee 10 Structural Connections Eurocode 3, Part 1-8 No. 126 and documents soon to be published by the SCI.

Software Update February 2010

Building Designer

AISC validation any warnings associated with the diaphragm were given in metric units, even if the imperial unit system was set.

AISC seismic incorrect calculation for the value of C_s in seismic wizard. See Building Designer Product Bulletin No. 9 January 2010 for full details.

AISC live load reductions - In some instances the software was incorrectly calculating the live load reduction where bays had infill beams.

AISC the effect of any live load reduction in the moment and shear forces was not been shown on the loading analysis graphic. The design was using the correctly reduced values.

EC3 Design Options dialog - EHF Forces page, any changes to the data were also being applied to the Sway Check as well as affecting the frame imperfections. Any edits to this data should not have affected the Sway Check. See Building Designer Product Bulletin No. 10 February 2010 for full details.

A dislocation in the deflected shape for columns which could occur has now been fixed.

Show\Alter State, a new item has been added to the Design Page for setting the Auto Stud layout property, to enable the easy setting of which beams should use auto layout.

Exporting a Portal Frame to the Portal Frame design software, any zero length loads are no longer exported.

A crash which could occur when using window create to create beams on a floor.

Using the move shear wall command did not also move the shear wall support to the new position.

Properties window - if closed, the command to reopen it was omitted from the View menu.

Validation - a number of errors were being generated, because the software was incorrectly identifying a "collision of elements" i.e. Gable Columns and Portal Rafters, Truss members and General Columns.

Sloping Composite Beams were being reported as not designed at the end of the design process.

A crash which could occur when using the create Gable Post command.

A crash which could occur when drawing the deflected shape.

Portal Frame

An Auto Save feature has been added.

The restraint dimensions are now drawn on the main Portal Frame graphic. Use view options to turn them on\off for columns and rafters. The default setting is on.

The details of any crane loading applied within a crane loadcase are now listed in the report.

Crash in member stability which occurred when trying to open the view for a Span prop.

Crash during the design which occurred, when a valley column was defined and the centre lines of the rafters on either side of the column were at different leCrash during the design which occurred, when a valley column was defined and the centre lines of the rafters on either side of the column were at different levels. This condition has now been validated and is not valid frame geometry.

The report setting to exclude the force diagrams from the report now responds as it should.the end plate details.

The generated DXF file was corrupted for both Beam to Beam and Beam to Column connections.

Moment Connections

Crash which occurred in a Beam to Beam connection when editing the section size.

The generated DXF file was corrupted for both Beam to Beam and Beam to Column Connections.

Design of Double Sided Moment Connections - See Fastrak Connections Product Bulletin No. 2 January 2010 for full details.

Splice Connections

The generated DXF file was corrupted.

Portal Frame v6.0

Crash which occurred when generating the report, when the design section of the report was included.

Crash which occurred when accessing the menu command for Printer Set Up.

Incorrect version number was being displayed for Portal Frame Modeller when Help - Licence displayed.
